The Xarelto Lawsuit: Everything You Need To Know.

Xarelto is a blood thinner that can prevent blood clots. Unfortunately, many people believe that Xarelto can cause severe bleeding. What is Xarelto?

Xarelto is the brand name of the drug rivaroxaban. Developed by Bayer, this drug is a blood thinner, administered orally and meant to prevent blood clots which could become dangerous. The drug can be used as a treatment for blood clots, and it can also be used as a method of preventing those blood clots from returning. Those who are prescribed Xarelto may have an irregular heartbeat or may be recovering from a serious surgery.

Is There a Comparable Class-Action Lawsuit?

Yes. A few years ago the popular coagulant drug Pradaxa was also the subject of several class-action lawsuits. In the end, drug maker Boehringer Ingelheim ended up paying out over $650 million to settle claims related to the Pradaxa drug.

Taking Xarelto:

xarelto - what is xareltoXarelto has been commonly prescribed as a blood thinner since its approval by the FDA in 2011. There are three tablet doses available with Xarelto – 10-milligrams, 15-milligrams, and 20-milligrams. The appropriate dosage will be prescribed by a doctor based on the needs of the patient and the reason for the administration of the drug. For instance, those who are taking Xarelto after surgery will often be instructed to take one 10-milligram tablet per day, while those with atrial fibrillation may be prescribed a 15-milligram or 20-milligram tablet.

Depending on the dose, it may or may not be necessary to take Xarelto along with food. As is the case with most medications, it is important to speak with a physician before changing doses of Xarelto. Also, Xarelto should not be stopped without first talking to a doctor. For safety, the drug should be stored away from any significant heat or moisture source.

Drug Interactions

It can be dangerous to take certain medications while taking Xarelto at the same time. Before starting any new medication, always speak to a doctor to confirm that there is no danger in the new combination. According to Drugs.com, the medications which could cause a problem when paired with Xarelto includes HIV medication, seizure medication, anti-fungal medication, and more. Of course, this is only a partial list – the only way to be sure that a new medication can be taken in addition to Xarelto is to speak with a physician.

Xarelto Side Effects

As is the case with most medications, there are side effects commonly associated with Xarelto. Some of these side effects can be relatively mild in nature, while others can be extremely serious – and even life-threatening. Some of the relatively minor side effects associated with Xarelto include muscle pain, pains in your arms and legs, itching, and others. For most patients, these mild side effects will not cause any issue beyond discomfort.

In addition to those mild side effects, more serious problems may arise. If you experience any serious side effects from Xarelto, you need to seek medical attention immediately. A partial list of the serious side effects you may experience from Xarelto is found below –

    • Feeling that you may pass out, related to dizziness and/or weakness
    • Dis-colored urine, specifically red, brown, or pink
    • Uncommon bruising or bleeding which did not normally occur before taking Xarelto. An increase in nosebleeds, or heavy menstrual bleeding, for example
    • Persistent bleeding that does not want to stop
  • Coughing up blood, or bloody stools

Again, the list above is only a partial record of the possible side effects from taking Xarelto. If you have any symptoms which give you cause for concern, the best course of action is to contact your medical professional for advice. Serious side effects can turn into medical emergencies if they are not addressed promptly.

Safety Concerns

While nearly all medications can include some relatively serious side effects, the issues seen with Xarelto in some patients have led to concern over whether or not this drug is safe. Based on lawsuits which have been filed by previous Xarelto users and their families, this drug has led to the deaths of hundreds of patients who suffered from uncontrolled bleeding after taking Xarelto. When compared with similar drugs on the market today, such as warfarin, it appears that Xarelto is creating an unusually high risk of uncontrolled bleeding.

It is not uncommon for blood thinning medication to lead to medical problems, as blood thinners are an inherently dangerous category of drugs. However, the issues seen with Xarelto are not common, and they have led many to file lawsuits available both Johnson and Johnson and Bayer.

One of the main concerns for those taking Xarelto is that there is no antidote for the medication. So, when a problem does arise such as uncontrolled bleeding, it is difficult for doctors to address the issue in time. Many patients claim that they did not know about the lack of an antidote, as that concern was not widely advertised by the makers of the drug.

To add to the many concerns surrounding Xarelto, it is also observed that many patients have actually developed dangerous blood clots while on the medication – despite the fact that the medication is meant to prevent such an occurrence.

Legal Action

Anyone who has been harmed by the drug Xarelto may wish to consider taking legal action against the makers of this medication. There are any number of factors at play when talking about a potential legal settlement for damage caused by Xarelto, including medical expenses, lost wages, cost of future care, and more. While taking legal action is no guarantee of receiving a financial settlement, it is important to consider all of your options if you or someone you love has been harmed by this drug. There are currently thousands of lawsuits in progress which are related to the use of Xarelto, and many more continue to be filed as patients who have been injured in some way choose to come forward.
